Janet Damon, Ed.S, MLIS

Janet Rene Damon, Ed.S, MLIS, is a literacy engagement activist who has worked to empower families and communities through inclusive programming, cultural strategy, and anti-bias workshops that center belonging and bridging.  As an educator with more than twenty-five years of experience working with students and families, she integrates best practices with practitioner knowledge. 

 

Janet was awarded the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award in 2022, the Inaugural Making our Futures Brighter Award from the Denver Black Family Advisory Council in 2022, Library Journal Mover and Shaker Award in 2020, and The Leadership Lamp Award for Equity in Denver Public Schools. 

This workshop will explore the development of racial awareness and young children - with a focus on implicit bias and other cognitive biases, and ways to foster inclusion and belonging with our youngest learners through high-quality children’s literature and equitable storytime practices.

 

Participants will gain an understanding of current research and best practices to help reduce bias in young learners and action-oriented ways to ensure equity is embedded in storytimes, literacy engagement, and family programming.
